Redfern Update August 2005

Hi All, yes its been a little while but work is starting to build up again, slowly at first, however this should rise to a steady flow.

Here we have a few pictures of the current work that is under way.

Work on the X class continues, there was more work than first thought and the body had more rust than could be first seen.
Most of the body components had to be removed, the mechanics of the X class have expertly restored and it is able to move under it’s own power.
The removed body components, ready and waiting to be reassembled, once in place the X class will the returned to it original livery.

Say hi to BERT! Bert was used as the wash car and has been extensively modified externally, notice the front door has been removed and sealed.
Inside Bert, all the side doors were removed and sealed and new doors created further down the body. Notice the extra air tanks fitted inside. Inside was also extensively modified
Super Car, its days numbered, lies at rest. This converted parcel van was used as a shunter at a number of sites including Hornsby. This unit could haul 16 carriages.

Inside Super Car, still shows her roots. Still supporting the shelves for the parcels and work cubical that the operator would have used to organise the deliveries.
Another view of the retired Super Car. This unit was extensively modified and used for many years as a shunter, the internals were preserved.
The “W Set” being inspected and problems being sorted one by one. Looking as good as new and maintained by professionals, she will have a long life.

Tracking down errant problems, nothing is left to chance, each component is methodically checked and rechecked, here the breakers are being inspected.
One of Railcorp’s spare traction motors. This is a 149 model from a 7000 series car. These units weigh in at approximately 2 ˝ tonnes.
Here we have a new axel, again one of RailCorp’s spares. This unit is suited for the U Boat’s and also the W Set. These weigh in at approximately 1 tonne.

The “W Set” still under scrutiny, our technicians performing more detail testing on the units
The “garage” for the REDS. The site has been under going changes and some of the buildings are being removed. Major cleaning and tidying of the site has occurred.
Another view of the Redfern sheds, show the old sign “Suburban car workshops Redfern.” Again the clean up is quite noticeable.

SBS has its “Iron Chef’s” , we have our own, La Pepi ala Chef, better know as Norm. A shy and kind man, but within seconds changes into “Super Chef” strange person with extraordinary culinary powers. Were does he come from?
